Replace Dell Inspiron 1545 CCFL screen with LED

I recently had to replace a screen on my daughter’s Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. It started to lose pixels several months ago and it was getting worse. It finally got to the point where it was hard to work with. The problem was that the laptop is approximately 3 years old but is still a nice computer. Other than replacing the fan on it about a year ago, it has been a good computer. I decided that I did not want to invest more than $100 – $120 on fixing this PC.

I placed an order for an Dell LCD Screenfor the 1545 and a new battery at Amazon. The screen cost $52.62. After I received the new screen, I took apart the old one. Duh… I should have done this BEFORE I bought the LED screen. I got lazy and it almost cost me. It was the wrong screen. It turned out that my daughter’s laptop had an older CCFL screen which is completely different. What to do…

I began searching for a replacement CCFL screen for the Dell 1545 and to my surprise found out that a replacement screen was going to run me in excess of $200 and in some cases more! What? Really? Who’s going to pay that? I barely paid $350 for the laptop! Now what do I do? Here is the screen I purchased
Brand New 15.6 WXGA Glossy Laptop LED Screen For Dell Inspiron 1545HD – For LED Model Only

I started researching whether I could replace a CCFL screen with the LED model that I just bought. There really wasn’t a lot of information out there or at least it wasn’t very clear, especially for folks who are not familiar with computers. I found a cable, also on Amazon. It was the Dell Inspiron 1545 Video LCD LED FLEX Cable R267J 0R267J 50.4AQ08.101. I bought it for $5.34. Definitely worth 5 bucks to see if this project will work or not. Worse case scenario, I’m out $5.34 or $57.96 if I can’t return the screen. One thing to note here, you must remove the keyboard to replace this cable.

Long story short…..too late for that, the project was a success. The cable worked with the new screen and the laptop booted up fine. My daughter was so happy and so was I. She had her laptop back and I have a few extra dollars left in the bank account. So, for a total investment of $57.96, we were able to extend the life of this laptop.

The point is to be very careful if you find yourself having to replace a CCFL screen. They are way too expensive. Try what I did, it just might save you a whole lot of $$$. If you need instructions on how to remove an LCD screen from your laptop, there are plenty of good Youtube videos on the subject. Here is a link to one of them. Good luck!

Hi,

Please could guide me on how to make the changes. The cable I see around is not the one you have bought and I need to know how you have used yours. I have bought the same cable.

Thanks

Fantastic, I was repairing a laptop for an aunt.
Being the good Samaritan ordered the screen based on a youtube video. which only mentioned at the very end that there were two types of screen (why do people do this).

Luckily, I found your post and it saved the day!

I am wanting to replace my CCFL display in my laptop and I want to convert to an LED like you did. I am looking at what cable to replace mine with, and there are different ones. For example, you replaced it with a Dell Inspiron 1545 Video LCD LED FLEX Cable R267J 0R267J 50.4AQ08.101. But my part number in my laptop now has P/N 50.4Q03.301. I have searched online and have seen that there is a 50.4AQ08.001-A01, 50.4AQ08.101-A01 and 50.4AQ08.301-A01 Which one do I replace my ‘03.301’ with? I am guessing the Q08 means LED and Q03 means LCD… Read more »

Is that cable just the cable that comes with the higher end screens for the same motherboard?

or are the motherboards different and that cable is the adapter?
